Berwick, the most  northerly town in England,

was, at one time,  the largest town in
Scotland!

*I
n the thirteenth century it was four times larger than Edinburgh,
certainly not the quiet English walled town that draws the tourists today.

*The town sits near the border with Scotland, and the flags of both nations flutter above the shops,
Now the only cross border struggle is by the football team Berwick Rangers, they play in the Scottish league.

*It is a town that is conveniently placed for visiting the border villages and the
impressive castles
of Northumberland, but not of course, before exploring what lies within  the historic walls
of Berwick-upon-Tweed.
